Pure and Natural
Traditionally, St. John’s Wort has come from wildcrafting. Because it grows wild in many parts of the world, people have simply sought it out and cut the flowering tops where ever they could be found. Many people believe this is the only way to get St. John’s Wort without sacrificing purity.
Today, however, wildcrafting isn’t as pure and natural as it once was. There are fewer wild growth areas that haven’t been contaminated in someway by adjacent industries or populations. Herbs found anywhere near towns, farms, or industrial areas may be growing in polluted ground water or covered with insecticide overspray.
Most of the St. John’s Wort used in the United States today comes from South America, Asia or the Middle East. There are no controls on sanitation, purity, or child labor oversight in these areas, so production is cheap. Typically, quality is sacrificed to the point where the final produce is useless and sometimes even unhealthy.
At River Camp Ranch, St. John’s Wort was grown organically and used to make high quality, medicinal, essential oils and tinctures. Our 30 acre field was isolated from our other operations to keep it free of contaminates. We planted and tended the herb without chemicals and harvested a healthy, weed free crop.
